Cattle Cattle and More Cattle!
Day 4 started off the day by going to McDonalds to get breakfast but mainly to steal their free wifi! It worked great to get our blogs up until we must've overloaded the server and it kicked us all off! But it was a great start until that happened :) anyways our first stop was at Lawson Angus Ranch. This was a great stop, because he showed us how he uses rotational grazing and how he plants rye grass to keep enough grass for his 500 head of purebred Angus cattle. After he showed us around we all received a free hat to help advertise his company. I have learned that the hardest task for produces in Australia is their advertisement. We all think Brad was pleased in getting a new hat because he has a different one on every day!Our second stop of the day was at Lima Park. He has 500 head of cattle and around 3,000 head of sheep. For both cattle and sheep he uses natural breeding simply because he doesn't have enough time to AI all his cows! He told us that he runs the sheep up in the mountains because it is dryer and the moister won't ruin the sheep's hooves. He also runs just 1 bull on about 30 cows and splits them all up into different paddocks. Another neat thing we saw there was how they shear their sheep. It's kinda a hard process to explain but they used a sheer that was on spindle and drive driven so they don't have to worry about the mess of cords.Overall today was a good experience for me :)Like I said in last blog I'll have to post pictures after the trip so keep on checking it out!!Singing out until tomorrow!Schaake
